In the fight for recovery, understanding your triggers is crucial. Triggers are like hidden landmines, capable of setting off cravings and propelling you towards relapse. But by identifying and managing them, you can navigate your path with greater confidence and control.

What are Triggers?

Triggers can be anything that ignites your desire to use again. They can be internal (emotions, thoughts) or external (people, places, things). Examples include:

  • Emotions: Stress, anxiety, boredom, anger, loneliness

  • Thoughts: Negative self-talk, memories of past use, glorification of addiction

  • People: Old using buddies, enabling individuals

  • Places: Bars, drug dens, gambling halls

  • Things: Objects associated with past use, paraphernalia

Identifying Your Triggers:

Self-awareness is key. Reflect on:

  • Past lapses: What situations or emotions led to them?

  • Cravings: What triggers intense cravings? (Music, Movies, stress…)

  • High-risk situations: Which places or people make you uncomfortable? (Eg. Sitting in the car with an opposite gender in the dark talking about only God knows)

Taming the Triggers:

Once identified, Learn to overcome:

  • Avoidance: If possible, steer clear of high-risk situations or people.

  • Distraction: When cravings hit, engage in healthy activities you enjoy.

  • Remind yourself: who you are in Christ!

  • Accountability: Talk to your trusted friend.

Remember:

Triggers are normal: Everyone has them. What matters is how you respond.

Progress, not “perfection”: There will be bumps along the road. Don't let setbacks define you.

Celebrate your wins: Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small.

🚨🚨I have some time available to meet some of you for a one-on-one meeting.
